The Island

Outer atolls.

Remote low-lying coral islands scattered across the Pacific. Some are a day trip by boat. Others take planning. All of them feel like arriving somewhere that time decided to leave alone.

Ahnd Atoll

The closest atoll to Pohnpei proper. Uninhabited, pristine, and reachable by boat in a few hours. A common day trip for visitors looking for empty beaches and clear water.

Pakin Atoll

A small community lives here year-round. The lagoon is shallow and warm, the reef healthy. Visitors are rare but welcome.

Mwoakilloa, Pingelap, Nukuoro & Kapingamarangi

Further out and harder to reach. Each atoll has its own language, culture, and character. Pingelap is known for its high rate of complete color blindness. Kapingamarangi and Nukuoro are Polynesian outliers — culturally distinct from the rest of Pohnpei State.

This page will expand with travel logistics, photos, and first-hand accounts from the outer atolls.
