Weather & Climate

Pohnpei is warm and wet year-round. Temperatures sit between 80–88°F (27–31°C) with high humidity. December through March is slightly drier, but rain is part of the deal — this is the wettest place in the Pacific.

Dive conditions are good all year. Visibility varies with rainfall but the reef is always accessible. The island never gets crowded regardless of season.

For US Visitors

The Federated States of Micronesia has a special relationship with the United States through the Compact of Free Association (COFA). This means US citizens can live, work, and travel freely in the FSM — no visa required, no special permits, no time limits.

Pohnpei is closer to the US than most people think. Under COFA, it's one of the easiest Pacific islands for Americans to visit. Just bring your passport (valid for 6+ months) and go.

Visa & Entry

Citizens of most countries can enter the FSM visa-free for stays up to 30 days. Extensions may be available. Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates.

There is no tourist visa application process for short stays — entry is granted on arrival.

Currency

Pohnpei uses the US dollar. ATMs exist in Kolonia but aren't everywhere — bring some cash. Credit cards are accepted at hotels and some restaurants, but smaller shops and markets are cash-only. Notify your bank before traveling.

Language

Pohnpeian is the local language. English is widely spoken and is one of the official languages of the FSM. You'll get by fine with English, but learning "Kaselehlie" (hello) goes a long way.

Health & Safety

Pohnpei has a public hospital in Kolonia. For serious medical issues, evacuation to Guam or Honolulu may be necessary — travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage is strongly recommended.

Mosquito-borne illness is present. Bring repellent. Tap water is generally safe in Kolonia but bottled water is widely available. Pohnpei is a safe, low-crime destination.
